When Makayla finds herself working with her ex-boyfriend, Travis her patience is as small as their shared office. They both agreed to work together and now it’s time to deliver. Makayla is struggling to accept that like it or not her success is now tied to playing nice with her ex. See below excerpt from Working Through It, releasing on March 15.

For the next few hours, the two worked in complete silence, wiping down every surface and decorating their modest office. Makayla kicked off her shoes, grabbed a framed inspirational poster, and climbed precariously onto her swivel chair to hang the frame from the nail in the wall. As she attempted to descend, the chair wobbled, forcing her to throw her arms in the air in an effort to maintain her balance. But she could already feel herself losing this fight with gravity as she braced her body for impact. Luckily, Travis crossed the distance just in time to catch her in his arms. Makayla pressed her body against his firm chest and freely allowed her arms to wrap themselves around his neck.

“Thanks.” She gulped down a steadying breath, her gaze soft as silk.

“People who trip over their own feet shouldn’t be climbing things,” Travis teased, lowering her to the floor, his arms still maintaining a secure grip. Reaching, he tucked a wayward lock of hair behind her ear, accidentally brushing against her cheek. Goosebumps sprang on her arms as her skin sparked from his touch. Makayla narrowed her brow, searching his serious hazel eyes, although she was unsure of what she was hoping to find. But one thing she knew for sure was that he needed to let go of her waist. Coughing, she backed away.

“You good?” He adjusted his view to examine the poster she’d almost broken a limb for.

“Yep,” Makayla replied, unable to meet his eyes. Stepping back into the middle of the office, she admired their work. We actually worked together toward a common goal without going at each other’s throats. Sure, it was cleaning a space the size of a closet, but if we could come together on this simple task, maybe there’s hope, she thought.

Removing her laptop from her tote bag, she plugged it into the nearest outlet. “I think we should craft an email. Something simple to introduce ourselves and our plans for the ministry.”

“I like that. I was just telling Phor we should plan an event to kind of kick off the change in leadership.”

“You talked to Phor?” Her stomach pitted into tight coils, angsty about the response from her new work partner.

“He’s my number two.”

“Don’t you think you should come to me first with things since we’re running this show together?”

“So, I can’t talk to anyone about anything related to the ministry until I confer with you first?”

Her head bobbed to the side. “Yes. If we’re leading the ministry, Phor shouldn’t know things before I do.” This is common sense, and if the roles were reversed, he would be having a fit right now.

“He doesn’t know anything. You’re being ridiculous.” Travis waved his hand, brushing away her concerns.

“Don’t be dismissive.”

“Don’t be paranoid.”

His tone was harsh, causing a burning rage to boil her blood. Makayla stood, her swivel chair spinning into the wall. “I am not being paranoid.” She pinched her fingers together for emphasis. “We are supposed to be a team. So, you should act like it.”

“If we’re a team, then you need to trust me.”

“Trust? I trust what I see, and what I see is you undermining me.”

Rubbing his forehead, he fixed his attention back to his laptop, signaling he was done with this conversation.

Makayla dropped to her seat, stealing a glance from the corner of her eye. The sound of his leg bouncing up and down made her painfully aware of his presence. This morning had gone so smoothly, but now, she felt foolish for thinking, even for a brief second, that this could work.
